Servo motors
A servo motor is a motor designed to allow precise control in terms of position, dynamics and speed. An encoder and a servo drive are used in a closed control loop. Servo drives are typically controlled via Profinet, EtherCAT, CANopen, Analogue or via a Pulse/direction signal.
Features:
- High torquel
- Compact design
- Large speed range
- Long lifetime
- Low vibration
Servo motor vs. stepper motor
Although servo motors and stepper motors have a similar range of applications, there are clear differences:
- Closed loop operation: servo motors always operate in closed loop, while stepper motors can also operate in open loop.
- High powers: servo motors are better suited for applications with high powers and continuous use.
- Speed range: suitable for demanding processes where precision and speed are crucial.
Applications
Servo motors are widely used in various industries. Here are some of their main applications:
- Robotics: for precision movements in robotic arms and industrial robots.
- CNC-machines: for precise milling, turning and machining of materials.
- Automatic packaging systems: such as filling, sealing and labeling of products.
- Transport and sorting systems: for controlling the speed and direction of conveyor belts.
- Medical equipment: in surgical robots and diagnostic machines.
- Printing houses and printers: for accurate positioning in professional printing solutions.
